The football tournament is for players under the age of age 20 and this year it’s scheduled to be held in Rwanda from 18 January to 1 February 2009.
The 8 participating teams this season include Mali, Cameroon, Ghana and Rwanda forming Group A and South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire forming Group B.These players had been chosen after the Round initial leg games held from 18 April to 20 April 2008, along with also the Second Round second legs suits out of 2 May to 4 May 2008, followed closely by First Round initial leg matches kept out of 27 June to 29 June 2008, First Round second leg matches held out of 11 July to 13 July 2009, as well as the Second Round initial leg matches held out of 26 September to 28 September 2008 and Second Round second legs suits from 11 October to 13 October.
The top two sides from each pool will advance to the semifinals, which can pick these four countries to make up for the Beneath-20 FIFA World Cup, which will take place in Egypt in September 2009. Ghana has also won African Youth Championship two times earlier, in 1993 and 1999. Next are Gambia, Mali and Congo, together with continental positions of 3, 5 and 4 respectively. Egypt, Zambia and Cameroon follow along. Cote d’Ivoire is also a strong competitor with an aggregate rating of 5 however this rivalry for the eligibility for the World Youth Championship will be a demanding one.
The African Youth Championship started back in 1979 and comprised teams / players such as Algeria, Guinea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Egypt, Libya, Kenya, Morocco, Mauritius, Cameroon and Tunisia. The teams played to be eligible for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup too. 2007 African Youth Championship watched Congo since the last winner against Nigeria, beating them from 1-0. This year’s sponsor (Rwanda) will need to fight just like last years bunch (Congo) to acquire the title for themselves.
